David Montgomery Got Poked About His Stats and Didn’t Even Flinch
David Montgomery is a rookie. By rights, he should be a bit more immature than a lot of the veteran players on his team. He’s young and has a lot to learn. Except this is entirely the case. From the beginning, the running back has shown signs that he is not the same as most rookies. He feels like a kid who grew up a lot faster than others his age. This due in large part to his upbringing on the tough streets of Cincinnati.
So one can imagine he doesn’t have the same mindset others would. Most football players his age tend to be a little more self-obsessed. They want to win but they also want to look flashy doing so. They want the ball and the big numbers. Montgomery is a competitor just like them, but he’s not going to let that get in the way of the team’s goals. Bears media asked the back about his slow start to the season. One in which he’s averaging just 3.3 yards per carry and 11 total catches.
It hasn’t been the fast start everyone had hoped for. Is he frustrated by it? Not according to him.
“No one in the room is frustrated. We just want to win and try to do what we can do to get to a win…
…It really don’t matter. It doesn’t matter at all. It’s more so about trying to figure out what we can do, what we do the best as a team, and how can we execute as a full entire team so we can get closer to a win…
…”I could care less about the rushing yards or I could care less about running the ball a lot in the game. I just want to do whatever I can for my teammates and the small things, the things where I can patch into the details to try to help to get a win.”
David Montgomery has the right mindset
The truth is Montgomery isn’t really the one responsible for the running game woes. Blocking by the offensive line has been less than stellar through the first six games. He’s had little room to maneuver and isn’t getting a lot of carries on top of that. One can blame head coach Matt Nagy and his unwillingness to provide a steady commitment to the ground attack. So it’s fair to say fans haven’t seen what the kid can really do.
It’s a sign of maturity and patience that he hasn’t let this slow start get under his skin as it might other players. He’s been through down periods before. It isn’t about complaining. It’s about working your way out of it. That is what the offense has to do. Pointing fingers of blame won’t solve anything.
