Ashantikee Wilson, 41, of Oakland was identified by the Alameda County Coroner’s office as one of those killed in the March 27 fire at a halfway house at 2551 San Pablo Avenue.
The fire ripped through a three-story residential building where around 80 residents and dozens of squatters lived, destroying several units and leaving many without any belongings.
“I’m stressed,” said Kearse, who was wearing the same clothing as Tuesday — a white T-shirt, black shorts, Nike sneakers and a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses resting on his bald head.
City officials said they are prioritizing women with children, seniors and people with disabilities to find housing.
While he said the apartment he had at the San Pablo Avenue building wasn’t perfect, he at least could shut his room door on the second floor for some privacy.
Kearse, who works as a chef, said the $300 debit card he received from the Red Cross during his meeting at the local assistance center at Frank Ogawa Plaza on Tuesday was appreciated, it wasn't going to help much in his search for a new home.
Kim Usher, 37, also met with city officials at the local assistance shelter.
On Wednesday morning, Usher and her family learned they would be temporarily placed in a hotel in Oakland as the search for permanent housing for them proceeded.
