St. Joseph's Prep RB Swift wins AAAAAA player of year
(AP) — Guided by one of the nation's most dynamic players, Philadelphia power St. Joseph's Prep walked away from Hersheypark Stadium on Dec. 10 with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Association Class AAAAAA football title.
Swift, who rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns against Pittsburgh Central Catholic in Hershey, guided Gabe Infante's side to an unsuspecting 42-7 victory and capped his final senior with 1,699 rushing yards.
Swift, the nation's top-ranked all-purpose back, was named Class AAAAAA player of the year Tuesday with the release of the Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State team.
Infante was tabbed coach of the year as the Hawks (14-0) finished ninth in USA Today's Top 25 poll.
Senior offensive linemen Carter Lynch and Jackson Evans joined their St. Joseph's Prep teammate on the all-state list.
Pittsburgh Central Catholic (14-2), hoping to win its fourth state title, landed junior QB Troy Fisher, senior running back JJ Younger, and three defenders on the team.
Notre Dame commits David Adams, linemen Kurt Hinish, and senior defensive tackle C.J. Thorpe (Penn State) also were selected.
Since 2009, sports writers who cover high school football around the Commonwealth have overseen the all-state process.
Players are nominated in all six classifications, and then a statewide ballot is issued to afford all writers the opportunity to cast their votes.
Record-setting senior quarterback Isaiah Hankins highlights six selections from Williamsport.
Hankins accounted for 2,550 passing yards and 27 touchdowns as the Millionaires won their first District 4 title since 1995.
