‘Long Way North’ Director Chose Emotion Over Detail for Animated Adventure Epic
French-Danish animated film is inspired by Russian literature and polar expeditions
French-Danish animated film “Long Way North” follows wealthy teenager Sasha as she ventures out to sea chasing the ruins of her grandfather’s ship in the Arctic.
“I really like drawing and paintings and I feel they express a lot of things through simplicity,” Chayé told TheWrap Editor-in-Chief Sharon Waxman in a Q&A following a screening of the film Monday night in Los Angeles.

“I saw with other movies animators would spend too much time on details, on the clothes, and animation would not be emotional enough,” he continued.
Chayé said the film “relates to Russian novels,” and called its Russian setting “the perfect nest” for this type of story, about a teenager born with a silver spoon who is forced on a character-defining journey.
