49ers notes: Kelly on $1 million pledge; CB Davis still sidelined; Teddy Roosevelt?
The 49ers’ donations to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation came a week after quarterback Colin Kaepernick pledged to donate the first $1 million he earned this season to underserved communities.
First-string nickel cornerback Chris Davis (hamstring) is sidelined for a second straight day, which makes it increasingly likely the 49ers will need to find a replacement for Monday’s season opener against the Rams.
Kelly said cornerback Jimmie Ward is a candidate to move back to the slot, where he played his first two seasons.
In training camp, Eric Reid said he was working in the slot, with an eye to covering tight ends in that area.
[...] the Rams can employ shifty wideout Tavon Austin in the slot, which makes a cornerback such as Ward the most likely candidate.
If Ward moved inside, Kelly mentioned rookie cornerback Rashard Robinson playing a “little bit more,” presumably outside.
In other injury news, cornerback Keith Reaser (ankle) and defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey (knee) returned to practice.
Kelly said converted right guard Anthony Davis would “probably” return to his old position if Joe Staley or Trent Brown was sidelined.
