The March King goes to South America
John Philip Sousa is remembered today almost exclusively for his marches, including “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and “The Liberty Bell” (y’know, the “Monty Python” one).
[...] his musical legacy also includes orchestral works and, most notably, nearly a dozen operettas that turned his trademark martial vein to theatrical purposes.
The most popular of these was “El Capitan,” a comedy set in 16th century Peru, that had a successful four-year run beginning in 1896 but hasn’t been performed in California in nearly a century.
