Calavera opening Saturday in Uptown Oakland; menu sneak peek
Chapulines. The more adventurous culinary travelers to Mexico might know that translates to grasshoppers, and that the insects are common street food fare, typically after being heavily spiced and fried, in the country’s Oaxacan region. And yes, they are on executive chef Christian Irabien‘s menu at Calavera, which is set to officially open to the public this Saturday inside Uptown Oakland’s Hive complex. The restaurant gets them imported from Oaxaca—via the grandmother of a Mexican photographer whose work is displayed inside the art-filled restaurant—and it was a source of some debate whether to offer the larger, tastier chapulines versus the smaller, and perhaps more accessible, ones.
