DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials say 19 Iowa Army National Guard soldiers are deploying Monday for Hurricane Irma missions with four helicopters. The Iowa soldiers will come from units based in Boone, Davenport, Iowa City and Waterloo. The Guard says the Iowans will move supplies, equipment and people and support searches and rescues. The weakened but still dangerous hurricane is pushing inland, hammering Florida with winds and floodwaters that create hazards for rescuers trying to help beleaguered residents.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Police in Louisiana's capital city say a 22-year-old man known as an up-and-coming rap artist was killed in a weekend shooting. Garrett Burton, of Baton Rouge, performed as "Gee Money." Baton Rouge news outlets report that he was found in a parking lot about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Police said he died at the scene. Police don't know the motive in the killing and no suspects have been identified.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Gas prices in northern New England have gone up a bit more in the last week, but may have peaked as refineries return to production following Hurricane Harvey. The latest survey from GasBuddy shows average retail gasoline prices in Vermont rose 1.7 cents per gallon in last week, averaging $2.73 on Monday. In Maine, the average price also was $2.73 per gallon, up 1.6 cents from the previous week. The price in New Hampshire went up 1.2 cents in the past week, to 2.69 per gallon. Читать дальше...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A South Korean child-monitoring smartphone app that was removed from the market in 2015 after it was found to be riddled with security flaws has been reissued under a new name and still puts children at risk, researchers said Monday. The app "Cyber Security Zone" is part of government efforts to curb what authorities consider excessive cellphone use by young people. AYER, Mass. (AP) — A recent college graduate charged in the slayings of four people in a Massachusetts home is heading to court. Orion Krause, of Rockport, Maine, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Ayer District Court. An elderly man and woman and two middle-aged women were killed Friday in Groton (GRAH'-tun), about 43 miles (69 kilometers) northwest of Boston. SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia city has installed two new electric chargers to get increased spending from interstate travelers. The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the city of South Charleston recently installed two Level 2 electric vehicle chargers, which are believed to be the first in the state to have been installed by a municipality. HOUSTON (AP) — Students in Houston are finally starting their new school year following a two-week delay because of damage from Harvey. Students at 202 of the Houston school district's 284 campuses were scheduled to start classes Monday. Other campuses will start classes on Sept. 18. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A University of Rhode Island professor says the state's economy showed improvement again in July. Economics professor Leonard Lardaro says 10 of the 12 indicators he tracks with his Current Conditions Index improved during the month. CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Police say an officer has been injured by a hit-and-run driver in Cedar Rapids. The crash occurred around 11:20 p.m. Saturday as the police cruiser sat behind another vehicle that was going to be towed. The police officer was out of cruiser so could hear an oncoming car skidding and could get out of harm's way. Police say the officer opened the car's passenger door after the car struck the cruiser, but the driver accelerated backward, knocking over and briefly dragging the officer before speeding away. CONSTANTIA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a central New York man was joking when he showed up at a neighbor's house with handcuffs attached to his wrist and claimed to have just shot a state trooper. LONDON (AP) — The U.K. government defended its response to Hurricane Irma on Monday, amid claims it has been slow to help British overseas territories devastated by the storm. The British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and the Turks and Caicos islands were all pummeled by the hurricane last week, leaving thousands without electricity or water and reducing homes to splinters. DETROIT (AP) — The vice chairman of the Detroit International Bridge Co. says mass transit could return to the long-shuttered Detroit train depot as part of an effort to revive the building. Matthew Moroun tells Crain's Detroit Business it's an idea "we're most focused on now." He envisions rail service to Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus as well as an Amtrak train stop. MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio jail is adjusting how it processes in-coming inmates because of the state's ongoing addictions epidemic. The Richland County Jail started operating a body scanner at the 266-bed facility in Mansfield in April. Jail administrator Capt. Chris Blunk tells the Mansfield News Journal (http://ohne.ws/2fdOXSv ) that defendants with a history of drug abuse or who act strangely on the way to jail are scanned right away.
