Authorities in south Louisiana recovered the body of a 29-year-old pilot in the wreckage of a helicopter Thursday that disappeared while doing a pipeline survey. Chief Criminal Deputy Sheriff Richard Hazelwood said the pilot of a state police helicopter spotted the wreck and directed authorities on the ground to the crash site. The civil air patrol began a search for the overdue helicopter about 2 p.m. and "the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office was notified about the missing aircraft about 7 p.m.," he said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly four dozen suspects, including the reputed Mafia boss in Philadelphia and an old-school mobster in New York, were arrested on Thursday in a massive case charging them with wanting to break knees and commit other crimes that sound like something from a Martin Scorsese movie. (AP) — Authorities say two people who tried to pawn some stolen PlayStations didn't realize that they had burgled the home of the pawn shop owner. Citing a Clarksville, Tennessee police report, The Leaf-Chronicle (http://leafne.ws/2axFG8I ) says 30-year-old Jeremy A. Watts and 24-year-old Jessica F. Heady tried to sell two PlayStation systems along with controllers, video games and DVDs.

The mystery started when an Illinois man shot video of the light early Tuesday morning and shared it with KTVI-TV . After seeing the report, an employee at an Illinois park across the river from the arch took a look at footage from a security camera and also saw the same light.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The University of Utah's football team has indefinitely suspended senior receiver Cory Butler-Byrd. Coach Kyle Whittingham says Butler-Byrd is dealing with personal issues but did not offer further details. The school says he remains on a scholarship but will not participate in team activities while he's suspended. Butler-Byrd is from Compton, California. He transferred to the University of Utah from Los Angeles Harbor College in 2015 and started at cornerback.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's largest online charter school has taken its dispute with the state over access to attendance records to the courts and the airwaves. ECOT aired two ads around the state reinforcing claims of a lawsuit alleging the department changed rules midstream so it can recalculate ECOT's attendance and "readjust" its funding for last school year.

CHICAGO (AP) — A judge appointed a suburban Chicago state's attorney to handle the murder case against the Chicago police officer who shot black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times, video of which led to large protests and the eventual ouster of the city's police superintendent. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the videos will be available online at 11 a.m. Friday on the website of the city agency that investigates police misconduct.

News outlets report that a police warrant says a police dog at the Nashville International Airport noticed the presence of drugs in two bags that arrived from an incoming flight on Wednesday. Metro Nashville Police say 23-year-old Juneequa Smith was detained after she picked up the suspicious luggage off of an airport belt.

(AP) — State troopers risked getting sprayed by a skunk to help the animal get free of a yogurt container that was stuck on its head in suburban Detroit. In a statement, state police say the animal was "spraying everything" when they arrived.

A wildfire near Lake Berryessa grew to 4,700 acres Thursday, as more than 600 firefighters worked to halt the blaze’s spread and prevent homes from burning. The Cold Fire, named after a nearby road, ignited Tuesday shortly after 4:30 p.m. along Highway 128, west of Pleasants Valley Road near the Yolo-Solano county line.
