An 87-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday night when she was struck by a car in San Francisco while crossing Van Ness Avenue, police said. The injured woman was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, including head trauma, police said. A strange odor prompted the evacuations of at least 120 people from several buildings in San Francisco’s Mission District Wednesday morning, but a hazardous materials team was unable to find the source of the foul smell, authorities said. The hazardous materials crew was checking out a nearby Salvation Army facility as the possible source of the fumes. Nearby homes and businesses were cleared out and at least one person was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to the fire department.

For a treat, I embellished my grandmother's brittle recipe to make a bacon-peanut brittle that was handed out as the parting gift at the end of the meal.
