Philadelphia agency probes reform school over alleged abuse
GLEN MILLS, Pa. (AP) — Philadelphia has stopped sending children who've committed crimes to a suburban reform school and are investigating allegations that a staffer choked and body-slammed a 17-year-old boy.
Department of Human Services Commissioner Cynthia Figueroa tells the Philadelphia Inquirer they're looking into the operations of Glen Mills Schools for Boys, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of the city.
The July 19 incident was caught on surveillance video and two staffers were fired.
The Glen Mills Schools is the oldest reform school in the country and houses 383 boys ordered there by courts.
