No injuries after freight train derails, leaks east of LA
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Thirteen tanker cars went off the rails in Southern California on Tuesday, and some leaked an unknown substance, but authorities said there were no injuries and no threat to residents and businesses.
The freight train derailment prompted precautionary evacuations of several nearby buildings and a homeless camp along a riverbed in the city of San Bernardino.
A gas- and alcohol-based liquid leaked from three tanker cars, but officials did not immediately identify the substance. An initial check by a hazardous-materials team said there was "no threat to the community," the San Bernardino Police Department said in a tweet.
