Officer sustains 'life-threatening' injuries in shooting
WEYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts police officer has been shot several times and critically wounded while in a foot chase with a suspect following a vehicle crash.
Authorities say the Weymouth officer was shot before 8 a.m. Sunday, and the officer's injuries have been described as "life-threatening." He is being treated at South Shore Hospital.
State police detectives and prosecutors from the Norfolk District Attorney's Office say a shooting suspect is in custody.
Neighbors say the suspect had been driving erratically as officers tried to pull him over. Witnesses say the man crashed into another car, fled on foot and then shot the officer. Several bullets hit a nearby home.
