With a fiery inferno, SF Opera’s ‘Götterdämmerung’ concludes a magnificent ‘Ring’ revival
The cataclysm that overwhelms the final moments of Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung” — with everything going up in flames, only to emerge purified and reborn — landed like a radiant punch at the end of the San Francisco Opera’s superb performance on Sunday, June 17. It was a double-barreled capper, setting the seal on the longest and thorniest component of the composer’s four-part epic “The Ring of the Nibelung,” and also on the cycle as a whole.
Either way, it would be hard to ask for a more triumphant conclusion to a triumphant week at the War Memorial Opera House.
