1 NRA leadership: Retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North is poised to become the National Rifle Association’s next president, bringing star power at a time the group is pushing back against momentum for gun control. North, who was a central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, is already drawing comparisons to former NRA president Charlton Heston. The NRA, based in Fairfax, Va., in its news statement announcing North’s appointment cast him as a warrior who will fight to preserve gun owners’ rights. North will replace Pete Brownell. Wayne LaPierre remains as chief executive.
