A’s intrigued to face Angels starter Shohei Ohtani on Sunday
On Sunday, the A’s get the first official look at Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani, the two-way Japanese star who will make his first big-league start at the Coliseum.
Ohtani made his debut as a hitter on Opening Day, and he singled in his first at-bat. Sunday, he’ll be opposing A’s right-hander Daniel Gossett.
Ohtani will be the first player to start as a non-pitcher on Opening Day and then start as a pitcher within his team’s first 10 games since Babe Ruth with Boston in 1919.
“There’s a lot of curiosity all the way around: how they’re going to use him, are they going to DH him, are they going to pinch-hit him”” manager Bob Melvin said.
