High school playoffs: CIF director defends new NorCal playoff format
California Interscholastic Federation Executive Director Roger Blake on Monday defended the state’s competitive equity model, which was used for the first time to determine bracket and division placements in the Northern California boys and girls high school basketball playoffs.
The equity model, which has been used in Southern California basketball tournament for at least three years, builds brackets and pairings based on strength of teams and not school enrollments. It has also been used in football (in the the last two seasons) and last fall in NorCal volleyball for the first time.
“We’re just trying to put teams of equal abilities together,” Blake said.
