Prosecutors: Man helped smuggle Mexicans into US via Canada
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — U.S. prosecutors say a Mexican man helped illegally smuggle Mexican immigrants into Maine via Canada.
The Portland Press Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2wiKPHf ) 40-year-old Silvino Orduna-Cabrera pleaded guilty Aug. 31 and was sentenced Monday to time served — about two months.
Prosecutors say he dropped off two Mexican citizens who had been previously deported from the U.S. on the Canadian side of the border across from Norton, Vermont, on July 17. Orduna-Cabrera then drove into the U.S. and picked up the men in Vermont after they walked across the border.
The U.S. attorney's office says Orduna-Cabrera finally drove the men into Maine.
