Sokoto remains peaceful - Police commissioner Mani says as personnel recover 948 weapons

The Sokoto state command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has recovered at least 948 guns under the amnesty programme as well as from operations in the last 24 months as revealed by Murtala Mani, its commissioner.
Mani made this revelation in Sokoto on Wednesday, April 5 saying some of the weapons were recovered while others were surrendered and that these include AK47, double and single barrel and locally fabricated guns with 1,200 ammunition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that commissioner said some of the guns were surrendered during the amnesty initiative aimed at discouraging restiveness and criminality as well as encouraging peaceful coexistence in the state.
According to him, some armed men voluntarily surrendered their weapons in recognition of the importance of amnesty initiative and that their nefarious activities were being monitored at all points across the state.
Mani further assured that the police would continue to work toward ensuring a crime-free society adding that measures had been put in place to sanction all manufacturers of locally made weapons.

He also said Sokoto enjoyed relative peace and appealed to the public to always report any suspicious movement or character to the police or any nearest security agency for prompt action.
NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Anambra state police command has recovered 107 guns and other types of ammunition from people said not to be qualified to possess such ammunitions.
The report said that the state commissioner of police, Garba Umar, who displayed the items at the police headquarters in Awka on Thursday, April 5, said it was in line with the recent directive of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, that all illegal arms circulating in the country must be recovered.
