ONE Defending Honor results: Shinya Aoki loses lightweight title by TKO, Roger Huerta picks up win
Shinya Aoki can say goodbye to his nine-fight winning streak and his ONE Championship lightweight belt.
The Japanese fighter faced 32-year-old Eduard Folayang on Friday at ONE: Defending Honor in Singapore, attemping to make his third ONE Championship title defense. But things didn't go well for Aoki, as Folayang was able to avoid getting submitted, while landing heavy shots on Aoki and eventually get the technical knockout victory.
This defeat marks Aoki's first loss since losing to current UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez back in 2012 at Bellator 66. Both Aoki and Alvarez share some history as they've fought twice, the first time being a submission win for Aoki at Dynamite!! 2008. Recently, MMA Fighting's Marc Raimondi talked to Aoki about a possible trilogy fight with Alvarez. Aoki is now 39-7 as a professional fighter.
Additionally on the card, ONE featherweight champion Marat Gafurov successfully defended his title against challenger Narantungalag Jadambaa by submitting the Mongolian fighter with a rear-naked choke in the first round. It was Gafurov's second title defense, after taking the belt from Jadambaa a year ago. With this win, Russia's Gafurov remains undefeated with a professional record of 15-0.
Also on the card, former UFC fighter Roger Huerta picked up a split-decision win over Adrian Pang. Huerta is now 2-2 in his past four bouts, and is 3-6 since leaving the UFC back in 2009.
