Roar of the crowd let Holly Holm knew she lost after Miesha Tate choked her out
Holly Holm found out she lost the UFC women's bantamweight title rather unceremoniously.
Miesha Tate took the belt from Holm with a fifth-round submission at UFC 196. Tate took Holm's back and locked in a rear-naked choke. Holm tried to fight it off, but was choked unconscious.
All the former champion remembers from the moment, she said Monday on SportsNation, was thinking she could escape and then waking up to the crowd going crazy.
"I can get out, I can get out, I can get out," Holm said she was thinking. "And then I woke up to the roaring of the crowd. I saw the crowd and I was like, ‘ugh.'"
After the first loss of her MMA career, Holm (10-1) will meet Valentina Shevchenko in the main event of UFC on FOX 20 on Saturday night in Chicago. A victory will get her close to a shot at the title she lost against Tate, who dropped the belt to Amanda Nunes at UFC 200.
Holm, 34, was winning the bout against Tate going into that fifth round. She lost the second round when Tate took her down and got her back in a very similar circumstance. Holm thought she'd be able to survive the scenario like she did previously.
"She had it really deep in Round 2 and I thought, ‘I can get out of it again,'" Holm said. "That's the last thing I remember."
There was no conscious decision to go out on her sword. Just the desire to keep fighting until she broke free.
It didn't happen, unfortunately for Holm. But she's been given plenty of credit for showing incredible toughness and not tapping out.
"I didn't think, ‘I'm gonna go out, I'm not gonna tap,'" Holm said. "I really was thinking, ‘You know what? I can get out of this.'"
