UN rapporteur: Armenian people are transforming their future
“The people of Armenia are transforming their future. It is very important for the authorities to further consolidate the rule of law, human rights protection, and formation of an inclusive society. It will promote economic development, which is something that the country needs,” Clement N. Voule said in Yerevan, as he was summing up his 10-day visit to Armenia.
He noted that “there has been no limitation to peaceful assemblies in Armenia since the period of transition of power”.
According to Mr. Voule, transparency of the judiciary is still in doubt.
“Armenian citizens have concerns that there are no concrete results for some cases that were opened several years ago,” he said.
The special rapporteur observed that women’s involvement in social and political life of the country remains passive, although women played an important role during the transitional period.
He believes that the early parliamentary elections (scheduled for December 9) will become another key event in Armenia.
Touching on his visit, Mr. Voule noted that he paid visits to Lori, Shirak and Vayots Dzor marzes apart from the meetings in Yerevan. He also met with the protesters speaking against the Amulsar gold mine.
“They shared some concerns with me. I think the government’s first step should be to hold a real discussion with representatives of the affected communities and inform them that the project complies with the main standards of business and human rights,” he said.
Clement N. Voule has visited Armenia at the invitation of the Armenian government. He will present his conclusions and recommendations during the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
