Editorial: A colorful election campaign ahead of us
This is turning out to be the most colorful election in years, with at least two presidential candidates in major controversies that have merited headline treatment. More than a month after the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte finally announced he was running for president. He immediately plunged into a controversy over his racy language in his comments on Metro Manila’s traffic in connection with Pope Francis’ visit last January. This was followed by his revelation that he was sexually abused by a priest in his youth. Sen. Grace Poe was declared ineligible by the Second Division of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) allegedly because she is not a “natural-born citizen” and she lacks the ten-year residency requirement for a presidential candidate.
