When the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) organized the 1st UNWTO World Forum on Food Tourism in San Sebastian, Spain on April 27 to 29, it was recognition that not only was food an essential part of all cultures and an increasingly important attraction for tourists, but it also gave local economic development a boost. Some countries like Singapore and Thailand have been extremely successful due to focused efforts on the part of their governments. The Singapore Tourism Board capitalized on the country’s rich food culture by promoting it as the Food Capital of Asia. It began by sponsoring the Singapore International Culinary Exchange (SPICE) program, which launched several international campaigns, among them a food truck that traveled around the world with some of Singapore’s top chefs.
