Probe urged on non-release of huge part of calamity fund
A congressional inquiry into the reported non-release of a huge part of the over P1-billion calamity funds to victims of natural and man-made disasters has been called by an administration congressman. The move comes four days before the second anniversary of super-typhoon “Yolanda” which devastated Tacloban City in Leyte, and many parts of Central Visayas. Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez filed House Resolution 2474 proposing a congressional probe into a Commission on Audit report that assailed the failure of the Office of Civil Defense to spend huge amounts in donations and government money to help the thousands of calamity victims since 2008. Benitez is the chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development. The OCD reportedly disbursed only P81-million out of the P466-million foreign and local donations to assist victims of various disasters, COA said.
