U.S. stocks close slightly lower in light-volume trade
U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Monday, retreating from last week's strong gains in a day marked by unusually light trading volumes in a holiday-truncated week. A merger between Pfizer Inc. and Allergan PLC that will create the world's largest drug-maker by sales pulled both companies' shares down by 2.6% and 3.4% respectively. The S&P 500 closed 3 points, or 0.1%, lower at 2,086. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 32 points, or 0.2%, to 17,792. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day down 2 points, or less than 0.1%, at 5,102.
