Supreme Court won't hear Trump appeal on DACA ruling
The Supreme Court on Monday declined a White House request to review a federal judge's ruling that forces the Trump administration to continue the so-called DACA program that protects young immigrants brought to the U.S. by their parents from deportation. The decision leaves in place for now a program instituted by President Obamain 2012 that President Trump has tried to end. DACA is at the heart of a fight between Republicans and Democrats over how to reshape the country's immigration laws. The program protects up to 700,000 people who are the children of parents who came to the U.S. illegally. The White House can appeal the decision to a federal appeals court and the case could still wind up before the Supreme Court as early as 2019. Still, the ruling is a blow to the Trump White House and it could give Democrats more leverage in immigration talks. The administration announced last September that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program would end by March 5 absent a new plan approved by Congress.
