The Afghanistan National Statistics and Information Authority announced that the value of Afghanistan’s exports and imports reached $10.3 billion last year.
The authority stated in a release Wednesday, May 15, that exports amounted to $1.777 billion, and imports reached $8.576 billion.
According to the National Statistics and Information Authority, fruits were the most exported item, amounting to $645.5 million.
The statement also indicated that medicinal plants, minerals, and vegetables ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively.
The authority emphasized that petroleum and oil products, with a total value of $1.377 billion, accounted for the largest share among import items, followed by machinery, transportation equipment, and grains, which ranked second with a value of $1.015 billion, and textiles, metals, and metal products, which ranked third and fourth.
This comes amid massive criticism by experts who say there is no transparency regarding the extraction of the country’s minerals and natural resources, which are the nation’s wealth.
Meanwhile, the expenditure of this national wealth is uncertain, and the current administration has not considered sustainable development criteria.
According to reports, Afghanistan’s exports were primarily to Pakistan, Iran, India, and the United Arab Emirates.
Earlier, the World Bank had reported that Afghanistan had $1.9 billion in exports and $7.8 billion in imports in 2023.
