Kioumars Heydari, the commander of the Ground Forces of the Islamic Republic Army, announced that the Iranian army is on alert at the Afghanistan border.
Mr. Heydari stated that the Iranian border with Afghanistan is under the control of his forces and that they “are ready to respond decisively to any threats.”
According to Iranian media, the commander of the Ground Forces of the Islamic Republic spoke on Thursday, May 9, at a ceremony in the city of Mashhad about the sealing of the country’s borders with Afghanistan.
Kioumars Heydari added: “According to the measures contemplated by the Islamic Republic, we are in the process of sealing the borders.”
He did not specify the exact timing for the completion of the border sealing plan between Iran and Afghanistan, but added: “Our estimate is that the sealing of the eastern border of the country will be completed as soon as possible.”
This heightened border security initiative by Iran coincides with increasing insecurity and threats from Afghanistan, particularly from international terrorist organizations including ISIS. Iranian officials have pointed to these threats as a key reason for their decision to fortify the border, aiming to prevent the infiltration of such groups which pose a risk to national security.
Amid these security concerns, Iran has also escalated its efforts in deporting Afghan migrants. This action reflects growing tensions and security measures deemed necessary due to the ongoing instability and the presence of militant activities across the border in Afghanistan.
These measures by Iran aim to control and manage perceived threats but also raise concerns regarding the treatment and rights of Afghan refugees and migrants within Iranian territories.
