Stan Van Gundy on NBA's COVID-19 cases: 'This [expletive] scares me'
He's more concerned about everyone's safety than a simple basketball game.
COVID-19 cases have continued to pop up at an alarming rate around the NBA.
Both the Mavericks vs. Pelicans game scheduled for Monday and the Bulls vs. Celtics game scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed because of COVID cases leaving teams without enough players to actually play in games.
Before that, the 76ers literally used seven players to play in a game against the Nuggets because they had so many players in the NBA’s COVID-19 safety protocol.
Things have been bad. Really bad. And they probably won’t get any better anytime soon.
People have been talking about how this will impact the NBA’s season and what these postponements man for scheduling. But Pelicans head coach Stan Van Gundy doesn’t care about any of that.
With his team right in the thick of things, Van Gundy, who is 61, is rightfully more concerned about everyone’s health and safety than when they’ll play a game of basketball. Here’s the full quote via Nola.com’s Christian Clark.
“First of all, personally, I’m 61 year’s old. This s*** scares me. It scares me. I don’t want to get it. I’m scared of other people getting it too. I just don’t want anyone in our group or anyone else to get it.”
Spot on. Everyone’s health and safety is far more important than playing a game or making it up on time. Van Gundy gets it.
Hopefully, the NBA catches on.
