Baltimore proved New England’s defense isn’t invincible. The Ravens handed the Patriots their first loss of the season with a 37-20 victory at home. Their fourth consecutive win was due in large part to dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson, a frontrunner for MVP honors at this point in the season, completed 17 of 23 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown. He also added 61 yards rushing and two scores. Mark Ingram served as a perfect complement to Jackson on the ground with 15 carries for 115 yards. Baltimore is second in total offense (427 YPG), first in points (31.4), and first in rushing (204.9 YPG) and should give the Bengals defense fits on Sunday.
As good as the Ravens offense played, the defense was also excellent. Tom Brady threw for 285 yards and one touchdown but also had a costly interception late in the game. The Patriots run game was held to 74 total yards. Baltimore ranks second in the NFL in rushing defense with opponents picking up an average of 83 YPG. Patrick Onuwasor led the way with eight tackles and the lone interception, while Marcus Peters also racked up eight tackles.
While the Ravens are riding high from their win over the Patriots, the Bengals are spiraling backward. Luckily for the Bengals, they had a bye week to fix some issues. The last time out, Cincinnati lost its eighth game of the season, 24-10, against the Rams. Andy Dalton threw for 329 yards and one touchdown. His performance was the second-most yards he’s compiled this season and just the third game this season he didn’t throw an interception. Joe Mixon rushed for 66 yards and Alex Erickson hauled in six catches for 97 yards. They proved against the Rams they are capable of moving the ball, but they have to capitalize on those opportunities. Wide receiver A.J. Green has been practicing this week and should be good to go on Sunday.
The Bengals defense is last in yards allowed (435.8) and last in rushing yards allowed (177.6). That is bad news with Jackson, Ingram and the powerful Ravens offense coming to town. Two weekends ago against the Rams, Jared Goff and Cooper Kupp exposed their lack of a pass defense. Goff threw for 372 yards and two touchdowns with Kupp on the receiving end of 220 yards and one of those scores.
