The updates on Jets (0-3) quarterback Sam Darnold have rolled in daily leading up to the team’s Week 5 meeting with the Eagles (2-2).
Thursday, the 22-year-old quarterback summed up his thoughts ahead of his maybe-return Sunday very nicely.
“I want to make sure I’m safe out there and that, you know, I’m not going to die,” Darnold said in a news conference, via The Associated Press.
It’s a totally reasonable wish. For what it’s worth, the third overall selection of the 2018 NFL Draft added that he believes he’s “good enough to play,” in regard to his health recovering from mononucleosis.
Darnold played in Week 1, then returned to practice this week. Head coach Adam Gase said on Wednesday that he may wait until as close to kickoff as Sunday morning before making a decision regarding whether or not Darnold starts.
Doctors will test Darnold on Friday, particularly monitoring his spleen for swelling. The quarterback said that if he is cleared to play and does compete, he will wear extra padding around his ribs.
