Leagues Cup: Cruz Azul vs L.A. Galaxy
Date: Tuesday, August 20 Time: 10:30 p.m. ET TV Channel: ESPN2 Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)The Galaxy snuck into this round after deciding to play a reserve-laden team against Club Tijuana in the quarterfinals. Despite their non-committed approach, they prevailed in a penalty shootout to be the only MLS side to advance to the semis. It remains to be seen just what type of team they’ll put out for this one with their race for a playoff spot in full swing. The G’s are coming off a well-fought draw against the Seattle Sounders over the weekend where they played almost the entire match down a man after an early red card.
Cruz Azul handled the Chicago Fire with ease to make it to the last four. They could use this match as a chance to improve their early season form. Through just five matches of the Liga MX Apertura, they sit in the eighth spot with two wins, two draws, and one loss so far this season. They defeated Atlas, 3-1, in their latest league match.
This competition may not be the most prestigious among supporters or even the participants themselves, but there has to be some pride in becoming the first to win it. With the Leagues Cup expanding next season, it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. Getting to put your name on the trophy first will count for something.
