UFC boss Dana White has a good reason why he won't let Conor McGregor fight Jorge Masvidal
It doesn't look like we'll ever see Jorge Masvidal fight Conor McGregor.
Jorge Masvidal’s popularity shot the roof after his record-breaking KO of Ben Askren at UFC 239 a few weeks ago.
The flying-knee just five seconds into their fight was a thing of absolute beauty.
Shortly after that win, Masvidal said he wanted to fight UFC welterweight champ, Kamara Usman, or UFC money-machine, Conor McGregor, saying it would be an easy fight for him and he would like to break McGregor’s face.
But it looks like Masvidal will never get that chance, because UFC boss Dana White correctly thinks Masvidal is physically way too big for McGregor.
White told TMZ Sports:
“Masvidal’s too big for Conor,” White said. “(McGregor) shouldn’t have (fought at 170). I hated that he did it. Not only did I hate that he did it once, I hated that he did it twice. He doesn’t belong at that weight.
“There’s plenty of fights for (Masvidal) in his weight division without Conor. He’s too big for Conor. Conor doesn’t belong at 170. He’s got the balls to fight at 170, but he doesn’t belong there. Hell no, (it won’t happen).”
And he’s right. McGregor did go up to 170 for his two fights with Nate Diaz, but the former lightweight (155 pounds) and featherweight (145 pounds) champ would be significantly smaller than Masvidal if they were to fight at 170 pounds.
There’s plenty of other guys that both Masvidal and McGregor should be focusing on, though it doesn’t look like, at least for right now, that McGregor will get the winner of September’s lightweight title fight between the champ, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Dustin Poirier.
I personally would like to see McGregor’s next fight be the trilogy with Diaz, who returns to the Octagon in August, and have Masvidal fight for the the welterweight belt.
But we’ll have see what happens.
