WATCH: Maximum Security owner filing appeal, staying out of Preakness Stakes
Owner Gary West went on NBC to vent about the controversial Kentucky Derby disqualification.
Maximum Security appeared to win the 145th Kentucky Derby but was disqualified when racing officials determined he had interfered with multiple horses coming around the final turn.
Now his owner, Gary West, has said that he will appeal the ruling, which gave 65-1 long shot Country House the victory. West appeared on NBC’s “Today” on Monday to discuss his decision. He also confirmed that Maximum Security would not travel to Baltimore to race in the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown.
West also criticized Churchill Downs for allowing 20 horses in the Derby, calling the track’s decision to have such an unusually large field “greedy.”
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission does not allow appeals; it is unclear what will happen next but West has hinted at the possibility of filing a lawsuit to contest the result.
