6 takeaways from the latest 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' trailer
Misdirection?
SPOILER ALERT: This includes information from the ending of “Avengers: Endgame.” If you don’t want to know anything about that move or “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” then it’s time to leave.
It seems we’ve been hit with misdirection: Mysterio is working with the good guys in “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”
For how long? That remains unclear.
In the latest Spider-Man trailer, the footage provides a handful of new revelations about the latest movie, some of which contradict what we know from the comics. One thing is clear: this movie is set after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” which means that Spiderman is left picking up the pieces from the events in that movie.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the trailer, along with a few quick-hit thoughts and observations on the movie, which is set to hit theaters on July 2. As mentioned, this includes information on how “Avengers: Endgame” finishes.
1. “The Snap” impacted the multi-verse
Nick Fury reveals that “the snap tore a hole in our dimension.” Which snap? Well, presumably it was Tony Stark’s snap that turned Thanos and his army into dust — and the snap that took Stark’s life in the process.
It appears that the snap brought Mysterio and a handful of enemies into the dimension that we know.
2. Iron Man’s snap is also taking a toll on Spider-man
Speaking of the loss of Iron Man, Peter Parker appears to feel the weight of losing Stark. We hear Parker reflecting on Stark’s death, and it seems he feels like much of Iron Man’s old responsibilities will fall upon Spider-Man. In this movie, we find out that many of the key Avengers are too busy to help out on Earth. It’s Spider-Man’s time to step up.
“I don’t think Tony would have done what he did if he didn’t know that you were going to be here after he was gone,” Happy Hogan says.
Parker later says: “The world needs the next Iron Man.”
That’s a lot of pressure for the high-school superhero.
3. Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) is actually a good guy?
In the comic books, Mysterio is definitely evil. In this trailer, they tease him as an ally, who is attempting to help patch up the problems stemming from the tear in the multiverse. Spider-Man and Mysterio even shake hands.
A previous trailer didn’t make it exactly clear what side Mysterio was on. It’s definitely possible that Mysterio could start as an ally before turning on Nick Fury and Spider-Man.
4. Happy is Spider-Man’s new mentor
While Happy was once the lovable friend of Iron Man while appearing in all three of that franchise’s movies, he appears to be moving into the Spider-Man franchise as a mentor to Peter.
5. M.J. knows
She knew all along that Peter was Spider-Man. And honestly, if one of your friends was a superhero, you’d probably figure it out pretty quickly, too.
6. Thematically, we’ll be seeing a battle between Peter Parker and Spider-Man
Peter seems to want to take a moment to be a teenager, spend time with his crush M.J. and enjoy the leisures of international travel. But super heroing gets in the way of Peter living a normal life. He’s got to decide: does he want to be Peter Parker or Spider-Man? That identity battle seems to be a rooted theme in this movie.
