#12 New Mexico State
New Mexico State earned a call-up to the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row after they destroyed all comers in the WAC Tournament. The Aggies ran away with the regular season, capping a 19-game win streak with a 32-point win in the final against Grand Canyon. Their reward is a round-of-64 fixture opposite Auburn—ranked fifth in the Midwest Region—on Thursday in Salt Lake City. Don’t sleep on this New Mexico State team – they’re deep enough to keep pace with a hot Auburn team, and can through various defensive schemes at the Tigers. 13 of their players average over 10 minutes per game, while only Terrell Brown averages double digits in points per game to lead the balanced attack.
#5 Auburn
The Auburn Tigers broke a 34-year drought to win the Southeastern Conference Tournament this year, soundly besting SEC No. 2 Tennessee 84-64 in the final to mark their resurgence. The school has now made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since their first five entries into the competition (1984-88). They’ll open their competition against New Mexico State on Thursday and are hoping to at least match their 2018 run to the round of 32.
Auburn had as many wins as SEC regular-season champions LSU this season, but their nine losses saw them finish fifth. Bruce Pearl showed promise by topping the SEC last season, but a conference title in this—his fifth campaign—suggests Auburn might have the makings of something mighty.
