Yerevan: Impunity of the crime in Maraga resulted in formation of an atmosphere of permissiveness and new barbarities
ArmInfo. The Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan made a statement on 25th anniversary of tragedy in Maraga. The press service of MFA of Armenia told ArmInfo.
"This day is one of the darkest, however not so well known pages of
Karabakh war, 25 years ago, this day, the Azerbaijani side with its
actions rudely violated the international humanitarian right. On
April 10, 1992, Azerbaijani omon ruined and burned the village of
Maraga of the self-determined Republic of Artsakh, burned alive and
tortured to death the innocent peaceful residents and captured the
rest, and the fate of some of them is still unknown. Appeared under
Azerbaijani control for several hours, the villagers endured such
cruelty and barbarity, which applies to all criterions of crime
against humanity. The impunity if the committed crime in Maraga
resulted in the formation of an atmosphere of permissiveness and
continuation of committing new crimes. Barbarities of the Armed
Forces of Azerbaijan during the last year April War against Artsakh
are the irrefutable confirmation of that".
To note, on April 10, 1992, the Azeri armed groups captured the
Armenian village of Maraga (Artsakh) and massacred innocent
civilians. According to Human Rights Defender organizations and
Armenian sources based on witnesses, the victims of mass massacre
were from 50 to 100 civilians, and around 50 villagers were taken
hostages. According to witnesses, some bodies were beheaded,
dismembered, charred or wore traces of torture. The majority were
women, children and elders.
