Government to carry out its commitment to restore damaged housing in earthquake zone in 2017
The government will fully carry out its commitment to restore damaged housing in the 1988 earthquake zone in 2017, Armenian urban development minister Narek Sargsyan said to a news conference today.
According to the minister, at the end of 2015 some 4,398 families in the earthquake zone had their housing problems resolved. However, another 965 families are still waiting for their problems to be resolved, he said.
He said provincial authorities in Shirak and Lori, the two affected regions by the quake, will release funding for 43 families next year to build housing, while the government will release funding for resolving the housing problem of another 287 families. The rest of the families will be provided with housing in 2016 and 2017.
The devastating earthquake that jolted the north of Armenia on December 7, 1988, almost ruined Spitak and Gyumry cities and a hundred of villages leaving according to the official information, 25,000 killed, 140,000 disabled and a half a million homeless. –0-
