Armenian president slams Azerbaijan for trying to destabilize the region
Armenia’s president Serzh Sargsyan slammed today Azerbaijani authorities for exacerbation of tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh, saying Baku aims to destabilize the region.
While speaking at a session of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in the capital of Tajikistan, president Sargsyan said the heads of CSTO member states met in the narrow format to discuss a set of sensitive issues, saying the meeting ran "in traditionally frank and confidential atmosphere," News-Armenia reports quoting RIA Novosti.
"I informed the heads of the CSTO member states on the situation in the South Caucasus placing the focus on a significant threat of rising tension along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the Azerbaijan-Karabakh line of contact. I would like to add only that the attempts of the Azerbaijani side to aggravate the situation in the absence of an adequate response from the international community is fraught with destabilization of the situation across the whole region," Sargsyan said.
The CSTO session is expected to adopt a statement that will reflect member states’ common approaches towards the existing global and regional challenges and threats. They are also expected to sign over 10 other documents on the current activities of the organization.
President Sargsyan suggested also that CSTO create its own peace-keeping troops, saying that Armenia while holding the organization’s rotating chairmanship will be paying greater attention to this issue.
CSTO comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.-0-
