YEREVAN, September 1. /ARKA/. Construction of 14 schools is underway in Armenia under the Asian Development Bank’s School Seismic Safety Improvement Program designed to support the government of Armenia. The program focuses on building earthquake-resilient schools and scaling up Armenia’s capacity for responding to natural disasters.
The office of Deputy Prime Minister Suren Papikyan said the results of tenders announced earlier for the construction of 3 more schools are being reviewed now.
The schools are being built according to international seismic safety standards with bright and comfortable classrooms. They will have ramps and elevators to facilitate access for children and staff with disabilities.
The schools will be also equipped with better facilities including new gyms, events halls, well-stocked libraries, and some will have solar energy systems for hot water. The school building and premises can also be used as a shelter for the community and as a collection point for emergency response after earthquakes.
ADB’s assistance includes an $88.5 million loan from its concessional Asian Development Fund, and two technical assistance grants of $800,000 and $680,000. The government of Armenia is providing counterpart support equivalent to $18.5 million.
The total funds are to be used to build 46 schools in Armenia, including 32 in the regions of the country. Within the framework of this project 7 schools have already been built and put into operation, including one in Yerevan. --0--
