Who run the world?
Advocating for girl power isn’t a new trend, although the pace has definitely picked up in recent years, with ‘gender equality’ some loud buzz words these days (and rightly so). Strong women have been fighting for decades to get ladies the seat at the table that we deserve, for our right to vote, to have a say over what we do with our bodies, to be heard and to be free.
Yet, once upon a time, not all that long ago, ‘feminism’ was considered something of a dirty word. Emma Watson summed it up perfectly in her address to the UN in 2014: “The more I have spoken about feminism, the more I have realised that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.”
“For the record,” she continued, “feminism by definition is: ‘The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.’”
And – for the record – we are so on board with that. (You too? Yep, we thought so.)
From Maya Angelou to Michelle Obama, Eleanor Roosevelt to Meryl Streep, here are the most inspirational quotes for women that will leave you feeling totally empowered, positive and ready to take on just about anything.
Maya Angelou
American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist Maya worked tirelessly for human and civil rights in her lifetime, writing several books and inspiring women the world over.

6. “When there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit. So let’s keep going – let’s keep going until every one of the 161 million women and girls across America has the opportunity she deserves to have.”
7. “Whether I am meant to or not, I challenge assumptions about women. I do make some people uncomfortable, which I’m well aware of, but that’s just part of coming to grips with what I believe is still one of the most important pieces of unfinished business in human history – empowering women to be able to stand up for themselves.”
8. “Human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights, once and for all.”

13. “Feminism is not here to dictate to you. It’s not prescriptive, it’s not dogmatic. All we are here to do is give you a choice. If you want to run for prime minister, you can. If you don’t, that’s wonderful, too. Shave your armpits, don’t shave them, wear flats one day, heels the next. These things are so irrelevant and surface to what it is all really about, and I wish people wouldn’t get caught up in that.” – speaking to Elle magazine
