Jesse Hahn scratched from Sunday start for A’s
CHICAGO - Jesse Hahn didn’t come out of his bullpen session Friday as well as he’d like to, delaying his return to Oakland’s rotation.
Hahn, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 5 with right shoulder fatigue, worked four innings in a rehab appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, but he said he had discomfort in the shoulder following his bullpen session.
Manager Bob Melvin said that given the setback, Hahn’s next outing will be another rehab appearance at some point.
Zach Neal, who had bounced between spot starts and Oakland’s bullpen, will go on Sunday at Chicago.
Melvin said that Jharel Cotton, who has been sensational at Triple-A Nashville since coming over in the Josh Reddick-Rich Hill deal, was not a consideration for Sunday’s start.
Neal, since rejoining the A’s on July 21, is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in five outings, including two starts.
[...] Melvin said that DH Billy Butler - a lifetime .378 hitter against White Sox starter Chris Sale - was out with a stomach illness Saturday.
Catcher Josh Phegley also is under the weather.
Phegley, who is on the DL after knee surgery, had been scheduled to catch Henderson Alvarez’s bullpen session at Stockton on Saturday but he was scratched from that duty.
