Miranda Lambert Tears Up on Stage Days Before Divorce Announcement
Fans are still reeling from the news of Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton’s divorce, which was signed off on Monday by an Oklahoma judge more than two weeks ago according to recently obtained documents.
The sudden split has opened up plenty of discussion about what went wrong and how both superstars are handling the situation - but aside from an official statement that the pair gave to the Associated Press asking for privacy, very little official news has come out of Music City, which is notoriously private when it comes to protecting its country music stars.
The only public clue prior to the announcement that there was something heavy weighing on either of their hearts? An emotional performance by Lambert a few days ago at a show in Wyoming, where the singer cried onstage as she sang her Grammy-winning hit “The House That Built Me.”
“The last thing someone wants to do is cry in front of 19,000 people,” Lambert said, before entreating the audience to help her finish the song.
“The House That Built Me” has a deeply personal meaning to Lambert, and not just because of its sentimental lyrics. The tune was originally written and given to her then-husband Shelton to record, but after he played it while the two were driving together one night, she was moved to tears and he insisted she take the song and make it hers.
It’s probably not too much of a surprise that Lambert is feeling shaky in the past few days, given the amount of speculation that is rapidly finding its way to the public following the announcement of their separation. A widely circulated rumor was that Lambert had been cheating on Shelton with fellow country artist Chris Young, who opened for her on her 2012 tour.
Young tweeted Tuesday that the rumor was false. “I don’t normally address gossip but in this case I will,” he noted. “My name has been mentioned as a contributing factor in Blake and Miranda’s divorce. That is totally FALSE. They are both my friends and I would not betray that friendship. Just wanted to clear that up.”
Shelton will make his first post-split public appearance on July 24, performing at a Wisconsin Festival. Lambert, meanwhile, has a small, acoustic club date set aside for July 28 in Nashville.
