Browns executive: Interest in 49ers’ Kaepernick overblown

Two days after the Browns hosted former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III, a member of Cleveland’s front office said the team’s level of interest in trading for Colin Kaepernick has been overblown by the media and a deal for the 49ers quarterback was highly unlikely to occur.

Head of football operations Sashi Brown said the 49ers reached out to the Browns about making a trade, but the talks never became serious.

"[...] is reporting we've got into contract negotiations and draft-pick negotiations with San Francisco that just weren't happening," Brown said at the NFL owners meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., via the Akron Beacon Journal.

Griffin’s visit was a signal Cleveland was exploring other veteran quarterback options beyond Kaepernick.

The 49ers have also been in trade discussions with the Broncos about Kaepernick, but head coach Chip Kelly has maintained he wants to keep the quarterback.
