Fake license plates from Russia were sold in Almaty - suspect detained

Tengrinews.kz — A man suspected of organising the illegal production and sale of fake vehicle licence plates has been detained in Almaty, according to the Chief Transport Prosecutor’s Office.
Investigators say the counterfeit registration plates were shipped from Russia via an express delivery service and then sent to customers in different regions of Kazakhstan.
During the operation, law enforcement officers seized fake licence plates and other physical evidence.
Authorities are now identifying all individuals who may have been involved in the illegal scheme.
The Chief Transport Prosecutor’s Office reminded the public that using counterfeit state registration plates is a criminal offence and may pose a threat to road safety.
Tackling fake licence plates
Kazakhstan may introduce criminal liability for the use of counterfeit vehicle licence plates. The proposal was put forward by Mazhilis deputy Bakytzhan Bazarbek.
According to the deputy, the use of fake plates is widespread and can have serious consequences.

“A great many people suffer because of this, and there are many accidents in which investigators later establish that the person responsible for the crash was using fake state registration plates,” Bazarbek said during a Mazhilis session.

He noted that such cases are recorded not only in Almaty but also in other regions of the country.
The problem is indeed widespread. According to KazAvtoZhol, since the beginning of the year, 1,942 cases involving counterfeit, concealed, altered or unreadable state registration plates have been recorded on the country’s toll roads.
Specialists noted that information about such vehicles is immediately forwarded to police for further action.
