In what comes as a potential boost for Tottenham in their pursuit of Nico Williams, The Telegraph have revealed that Chelsea might have to sell some of their players before they can push ahead with a move for the Athletic Bilbao star.
Williams is having an exceptional season at San Mames, with six goals and 11 assists across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt), and the winger’s performances are now seemingly turning a lot of heads.
Tottenham’s interest in the 21-year-old first came to light last month when Dean Jones revealed in his column on Sports Lens that the Lilywhites and Aston Villa were both keeping tabs on the youngster.
A couple of days ago, TEAMtalk asserted that Spurs would have to battle their London rivals Chelsea for the Athletic Club star, with the Spaniard alleged to be a long-term target for the Blues.
Chelsea’s financial problems could help Spurs
However, The Telegraph have now said that a move for Willaims might not be straightforward for Chelsea, given their current financial predicament.
The report says that some believe the club would have to raise at least £100 million by June 30 to be sure of complying with profit and sustainability rules, although the Stamford Bridge hierarchy is refuting this figure.
The outlet explains that the West London club would thus have to offload some of their players before they can push ahead with a move for Willaims.
While the fee might not be an issue since the Spain international has a £43m release clause, it is explained that his wages might be a problem for Chelsea, with the winger currently thought to be earning over £100,000 per week after tax at Bilbao.

Tottenham are in a much more comfortable position with respect to PSR than many of their Premier League rivals, which is why Spurs are very well-placed to have a big summer window and make some statement signings that could elevate the squad to the next level.
