Sports briefs: Pacifics fall as Train Robbers pull away late
The San Rafael Pacifics battled Bakersfield through six innings in the first meeting of the season between the two teams but the Train Robbers scored three times in the seventh inning en route to a 7-3 victory on Saturday night.
San Rafael (18-4 Pecos) scored single runs in the first, second and third innings, with RBIs from Evan Bacani, Jalil Marinez and Tyler Georgeson.
Joseph Nunn, Jr., delivered the decisive hit for Bakersfield, belting a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Train Robbers (14-8) the lead for good.
San Rafael outhit Bakersfield 7-5 but were unable to turn those hits into runs. Bakersfield starter Jonny Damon went nine innings and struck out eight against three walks.
Marin Waves
Ellie McCuskey-Hay qualified for Nationals in four events, pacing the Marin Waves at the USATF Region 16 Qualifier at Modesto over the weekend.
McCuskey-Hay (Girls 15-16) medaled in three events, taking second in the javelin (77 feet, 5 inches), third in the 100 meters (12.32 seconds) and third in the 200 (25.91). Additionally, McCuskey-Hay qualified for Nationals with a mark of 15-9.5 in the long jump to place seventh.
Myles Brown (Boys 13-14) also found success with the javelin, making a throw of 80-3 to place fifth and qualify for Nationals. Marshall Patron (Boys 15-16) had a throw of 83-1 to place eighth and also move on to Nationals.
Other qualifiers for the Waves were Juliet Reichardt (Girls 15-16), finishing second in the high jump with a distance of 4-9, and Justin Shern (Boys 13-14) who was second in the 3,000 (10:12.29) and sixth in the 1,500 (4:46.95).
