After two seasons filled with laughs, tears, and drama, MTV has announced that they are canceling The Hills: New Beginnings. The show, which is an updated version of The Hills (2006-2010), follows the lives of most of the original cast members. Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner, Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt, Justin "Bobby" Brescia, Whitney Port, Frankie Delgado, and Jason Wahler starred in both seasons; newcomers to the series include Brandon Thomas Lee, Jason's wife Ashley, Frankie's wife Jennifer, and Caroline D'Amore, and Brody's ex Kaitlynn Carter. Lauren Conrad chose to not return for the show, while Mischa Barton and Stephanie Pratt only appeared in season one.
The Hills, which ran for six seasons on MTV, was a popular reality television show that followed the lives of several women and those with connections to them. With main cast members including Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag, Audriana Patridge, and Whitney Port, cameras followed the group's successes (and failures) at home and work. While the show was a hit with younger generations, there were several accusations that the show was scripting storylines for entertainment. The same criticisms of potential scripting were also said about Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County (shortened to just Laguna Beach), the predecessor to The Hills.
The Hills: New Beginnings began airing in 2019, and many fans of The Hills were excited to watch the rebooted series. Despite the buzzed interest around the show, however, MTV has announced that they are scrapping it after two years. In an announcement made on Tuesday, Deadline was the first to report that the network was saying goodbye to the prospect of a third season. Luckily, according to People, fans don't need to be too disappointed: sources close to MTV say that there are other projects being developed instead.
Most of the cast have stayed silent on the future of the show lately, but Heidi Montag has been dropping hints about the situation for weeks. Two weeks ago, Heidi uploaded a Snapchat video that showed her discussing The Hills: New Beginnings. Mysteriously saying, "I got some news about The Hills. It'll be interesting to see if that happens or not," Heidi then continued, "Let's just say when one door might be closing, another one's gonna open." While her second sentence may refer to the aforementioned works being developed by MTV, Heidi slyly confirmed the show's cancelation on January 15th. Hopping on Twitter, the star wrote, "End of an era...so thankful for the opportunity."
While The Hills: New Beginnings only ran for a short time, fans of the show can still check out episodes on Paramount+. With another sort of spin-off more than likely to be in the works, this is not the last viewers will see of their favorite cast members. With many of them gracing MTV since their early 2000's high school days, it won't be that easy to end the franchise for good.
