A new production listing reveals Disney+'s Kenobi series, focusing on Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan, starts shooting in January, earlier than expected. McGregor played the role across the prequel trilogies from 1999's Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace through 2005's Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. He inherited the role from Sir Alec Guinness, who turned the relatively small part into an iconic one in the original trilogy. The Scottish actor will reprise the role in a long-awaited limited series for Disney+ consisting of six episodes.
Reportedly titled Kenobi, the show will be Disney+'s second live-action Star Wars series, following The Mandalorian, which has turned into a massive hit for the streaming service. Besides McGregor, Kenobi is rumored to be casting Aladdin's Naomi Scott in the female lead and has also previously sent out casting calls for young Luke and Leia. McGregor has been quiet on plot details in interviews this year but revealed filming was aiming to start in March 2021 when asked about it on The Graham Norton Show. However, that date seems to have changed if a new production listing is to be believed.
An update has been posted on Production List, revealing that Kenobi is set to roll cameras as soon as January 4th. The listing also shows the shooting locations will be Boston and London. One assumes the shoots will be on virtual indoor sets, and both cities will be in the grip of winter at that time, hardly suitable for shooting desert scenes on Tatooine. The listing also features a production summary, which mentions Tusken Raiders and an "infant boy," clearly referring to young Luke Skywalker. You can see the summary below:
Tatooine-a harsh desert world where farmers toil in the heat of two suns while trying to protect themselves and their loved ones from the marauding Tusken Raiders. A backwater planet on the edge of civilized space. And an unlikely place to find a Jedi Master in hiding, or an orphaned infant boy on whose tiny shoulders rests the future of a galaxy.
The news of production starting sooner than anticipated is surprising, given that most productions have been delayed in 2020, pushing 2021 productions further back into the year. However, Disney has been able to get pre-production done quicker than previously anticipated, allowing the shoot to start earlier than previously reported. McGregor had already done costume tests on the set of The Mandalorian. That was a sign pre-production had begun in earnest, and clearly, things have gone well enough to get filming started in January.
There's hope, then, that Kenobi will announce some more casting news soon, as well as an expected release date. For now, though, fans will have to make do with watching The Mandalorian and keep a close eye on announcements about the upcoming Obi-Wan show as it begins the lengthy production process under the guidance of director Deborah Chow.
